MARIGAT |

| MARIGAT , by virtue of its location, ought to be the hub of the
Baringo-Bogoria tourist circuit, but for now at least, it's a bland,
dust-blown little place. Urban development here follows what seems to be
an unusual course, as among the tin shacks stands an impressive bright
green and white mosque . With two tiers of large windows, and a capacity
that obviously exceeds the area's Muslim population, it dwarfs its
humble wooden predecessor to the rear. Apparently funded by some wealthy
Saudi-Arabian, Muslim Nubians from Eldama Ravine, working on the
irrigation project south of Marigat, were the original congregation of
this mosque. If you need to stay in Marigat, there are a couple of B&Ls
on the main road near the junction with the B4, of which Toyoy Timber
Yard and Lodging (PO Box 19 tel 0328/51268; under Ksh500) is clean and
well kept. Alternatively, you can follow the sign at the junction to
Marigat Inn (PO Box 62 Kabarnet tel 0328/21825; under Ksh500), 1.5km
east of the junction, just beyond the end of the tarmac. The clean, s/c
rooms with hot showers (and some non-s/c singles) are set in a small
jungly garden, with a shop selling essentials, and a friendly restaurant
where the food, while not exactly cordon bleu, is more than edible. The
bar is located next door to avoid disturbing sleeping residents, but a
more conducive drinking establishment is to be found opposite the Toyoy
. |
