| There are several matatus each day from Likoni to SHIMONI , but they
tend only to run early in the morning and after lunch. Vehicles for
Lungalunga will drop you at the turn-off where you could wait for a lift,
or a matatu, though through matatus will be packed to the gunwhales by
the time they reach here. A few years back, when Reagan's America
enjoyed cosy relations with Kenya, the United States had its eye on
getting a naval base on Wasini. This would be a far worse calamity for
this remarkable area than the reach of another tentacle of tourism, but
thankfully, for the moment, it seems to be on the back burner. For the
present, Shimoni and the rocky sliver of Wasini island, just offshore,
remain both idyllic and fascinating - a rare combination. |
